Need to replace brakes soon on the '04 X3...

Looking to upgrade from stock pads and rotors. Anyone have any experience with some drilled/slotted rotors and good, possibly dustless pads? What about stainless lines as well and some better fluid? Where is the the best place to buy? Thanks!

For pads, I would use Axxis Deluxe Advanced (not Axxis ULTs or other versions). Little to no dust, good pedal feel, good bite.

There are lots of drilled/slotted rotors around, but IMO they are purely cosmetic, and I won't accept the reduced performance. If by upgrade you mean cosmetic upgrade, then fine. First choice would be to go with OEM, or Centric if you don't like OEM. At least Centric have the OEM vane design, unlike many cheap copies on e-Bay. You can get Centric drilled and slotted if you must. I would pay attention to the coating any rotor you look at has to prevent surface rust. My replacement OEM rotors (on the X5) had the best coating of any I have tried.

Stainless steel brake lines aren't a bad idea if you need to replace the brake lines.

Changing brake fluid is not required, the standard spec is fine. It is much more important to change it every two years than to upgrade it.

You can get the pads (and rotors if you want) from Zeckhausen Racing (www.zeckhausenracing.com) . I had great experience with their customer service. There are other board sponsors as well, for other products, but I don't have experience with them.

JCL, thank you for the info! I forgot about Zeckhausen...The drilled/slotted rotors would be just for looks really. My wife is not a racer, I just figured if I am upgrading I might as well add some looks as well. How are the Axxis pads in the wet? I had Mintex on my old Audi S4 and in the wet they would not grab initially, not an experience I want my wife to have. Thanks again!

Mill the rotor (if needed).
Ford Heavy Duty DOT 3 fluid.
Porterfield R4-S pads.

Done.

Well, I live on the Wet Coast of Canada, and have no issues with wet weather performance of any of the Axxis pads I have installed on my own vehicles.

We have a selection of replacement rotors and pads available that can be found here on our website:

BMW E83 X3 M54 2.5l > Braking > OEM - ECS Tuning Inc

There are quite a few options available for pads with better bite / less dust, the EBC GreenStuff are a great option as well as a few others.
