Brakes

I have been looking around to see if I need to have my rotors turned or replaced when I do the brakes. I have a 2005 2.5 X3 with 45000 miles on it. Dealer said it is time to do the brakes but estimate was almost $1400. There is some great DIY info but I can not find any info on the rotors (turn, replace or leave them be with only 45000 miles on them). The sensors have not gone off yet.
Also any info regarding best pads, rotors (if needed) and best places to purchase (other than the dealer) would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't done brakes yet on the X3, but have done several sets on other recent BMWs (535, X5).

I replace rotors. It isn't worth my time to have to go back in and do them again when they are noisy. While it is technically possible to turn them, it isn't commonly done these days. The rotors don't have much material on them from new, as they are built for low unsprung weight, so they are generally considered a single use item.

I like to use OEM rotors, as the last set I bought had an anti-rust coating on the hat, and they stayed looking good. I have used jobber rotors, but there isn't enough price difference to make it worthwhile. Also, some jobber rotors have a poor cooling fin design, and the OEM ones are good. If I had to use aftermarket rotors, I would get Centric.

I use Axxis Deluxe pads, because I don't like cleaning wheels. If the dust doesn't bother you, just use the OEM pads as they are the quietest. Axxis Deluxe have very similar bite and pedal feel, no dust, and very little noise (but slightly more noise than OEM in my experience). Bedding them in is important. I get them from www.zeckhausenracing.com, great service and a board sponsor. Bedding instructions are on their site.

I don't think you need to replace the rotors unless they are worn or badly scored. All rotors have a minimum thickness, but I'm not sure what it is for the X3. If it is worn, then you will have a definite ridge along the outer edge. Rotors normally last two sets of brake pads for me.

If you do change them, I'd stick with the OEM ones as they are a good product. As for pads, I just put a set of EBC redstuff pads on my jag and love them. Much better pedal feel. I've also used these on my ZM Coupe with great effect.

It's not that hard to do yourself, and you'd save a small fortune!
