X3 3.0D Service Interval
I bought a 12/2008 3.0d in mid 2009 with 10Kms travelled. Had complimentary first service at 20Kms at a BMW dealer, they said I should do a oil service every 6 months or 8000km. So can we rely on the service indicator? Recently had an oil leak, sent to a local specialist to avoid rip off dealer cost. They have to replace the PCV value then finally i have to replace the intake manifold which cost a fortune. The local specialist also suggest more frequent service interval is required for diesel especially more city travel. |

Do not rely on what BMW dealership says if you plan to keep your car long term, nor the service indicator. Unless you have the service time changed to reflect 8000 -9000 (miles), this is where you always want to change it. If a diesel requires more frequent changes then sooner can never hurt. City is harder for sure on the drive train. So makes sense to do it sooner.

There is no data that suggests that the published service intervals are a problem, no matter how long you plan on keeping it.
I have moved from 5000 km changes many years ago, to 8000 km, to 12,000 km, and now to 20,000 km+ on the last two vehicles. No issues whatsoever, no increased oil consumption. The oil stands up. The filter is good for two year intervals. You may decide to do it more frequently out of an overabundance of caution, but you don't necessarily need to go form 20,000 to 8,000. And once a year is a good target, not once every six months. You may want to look on the Australia forum on this site because intervals can depend somewhat on local fuel quality. What matters most with the diesel is the fuel filter change interval, IMO.
