8 to 11 mpg!!!!!!!! 4.4 petrol

Had the X5 for a month now however still readings saying 8...to 11 mpg around town...I knew it would be thirsty but that's literally taking the piss, checked tyres 2 were low but corrected them... Surely can't be right..

How do you calculate the mpg? The OBC is known to be inaccurate. Manual calculation will give more accurate result.
My Dinan 4.8iS is getting 13mpg around town, BTW.

I'd start with The Usual Suspects... low tire pressure, old spark plugs, clogged air filter, poor fuel quality, extra weight from dead bodies under the cargo cover....

Hahah...dead bodies, I've had the puns already about the coke stashed in the seats..by yes must admit I'm keen to tackle the filters.

I'm getting a constant 330-360 miles per tank
OBC gives me 16.4 mpg
My calculations give 15mpg

When driven hard...11-12mpg
So I'd say check your air filter, oxygen sensors, MAF etc...chances are something is clogged up .
I've always seen improvements in MPG after O2 sensor replacement .after 100k miles they're due anyway.

Damn! Glad I drive a diesel (which will keep most of the petrol engine models honest with performance anyway). Manual calculation on mine - I get around 28.5/mpg on the town cycle. Regularly get 34mpg on the highway cycle.

Edit: this translates to a regular 600 miles on the "town" cycle.

I would certainly be starting with air filter. What is the situation with MAF sensors in these things? Can they be cleaned safely?

Another thing to check is the grade of oil its running. The thicker the oil, the worse the economy (generally).
