It attaches to the end of the energy absorbers. The stock hitch attaches in roughly the same place, but includes stiffeners that replace the energy absorbers and tie the hitch to the frame several ways.

This is exactly what I am looking for, a factory like attachment for a hitch. Did you buy? I see it on Amazon for $107 with free shipping.

I haven't yet. I found them on eBay for $84 plus $25 shipping. I wanted to see if anyone had tried it yet. I'm thinking about getting it though.

I don't think there is any other option besides the bolt through sheet metal option. I think I'll give it a try too. I noticed the trailer light control module has sky rocketed in price. $200 for just the module. Can't get the wire harness either. Have to make your own.

I have a very similar one on my X. it was a dream to install! (right after i realized that i had to take the old stiffening bar off before putting the hitch on)
Ive hauled lots of trailers with it, and its great! holds up really well and looks pretty well engineered. any questions feel free to pm me!

Trailer control modules show up on eBay pretty frequently. I paid about $80 for mine back in January. The wiring harnesses are a little harder to come by. There's a Westfalia part# you can look for in addition to the BMW part. (Don't have it handy, but if you search Westfalia you'll find it). Making your own harness wouldn't be that big of a project. I started trying to find the OEM or equivalent for just the connector, but gave up that search when I found a new Westfalia one on eBay for $25.
Whatever you decide, I wouldn't be without the BMW (or equivalent Range Rover) control module. While some report that the generic wiring kits work OK, the electronics in our cars are fragile enough without adding something non-standard.... My $.02

Lol just picked one up off eBay for $80 free shipping. All in I have about $220 into the whole set up. I'm going to wire a 7way pin into the plug for the trailer light wire harness. Also a bracket for the 7way plug is included in the price.
