questions on the 4.8 engine

Does the 4.8 have all the issues the 4.4 does? valve stem seals, intermediate levers, valley pan coolant tube ect?
My wife has a 2005 X5 4.4 sport and we love it, except for the intermediate lever problem we have. I have been kicking around the idea of getting the 4.8, but it seems with the air ride issues or if it has the valvetronic intermediate lever issues, or other common and expensive bmw problems I might not worry about it.

Just trying to learn a little more about the 4.8 and maybe there are certain year models to stay away from. I'm sure a 2006 would be the best model to look for with low miles. The 4.8 is rare tho & not easy to find. ( I mean I can find a few, but the prices are way up there for something that might have expensive issues)

yes the 4.8is has those problems and some body problems too.............the problem with the heads have a lot to do about the oil You use and how often You change the oil, if You find one with low miles You can save the heads with knowing You to have change the oil with a high quality oil ,lets the engine warm up on cold days, keep the CCV clean , and of course run a good fuel and also doing Chevon fuel injector cleaner every 4k miles.............You have to be careful with both engines[4.6is,4.8is], I have the 4.8is now running strong ................the air ride is cheap if You go with Arnoff high quality strut and air life time warranty.[$420 after You return the old one].

good luck

I've put 40k miles on my 2005 4.8is so now it has 135+k miles on the clock. No serious problems during my ownership and none known prior. It was well maintaine before I got it, and has been since. Perhaps that is why it has been essentially trouble free.

Well, I guess I'll hold off for awhile. I need to get all the bugs out of our 4.4 before buying another problem child. haha

My lever issues (misfires on cold starts) is going away again with the warmer weather. I'm learning to live with it for the trade off

My wife hasn't complained much about hers the past week now that its warmed up some, However I'm really picky about things not working correctly and I'll fix the issue this summer. I'm sure I will do the valve stem seals at the same time to be done all at once. I don't mind the labor, its just the parts total and renting/buying the AGV tool to do it all.
