Trader, I'd go Behr. It's built in China, but hopefully supervised by Behr's people.

Conjecture, but still a notch above the no-name ones.

I've had it about a year or so, still working.

NJ weather will probably not be so hard on your fan anyway.

I had to pull the front bumper to replace the fan. Pulling the bumper as per the diy in the faq's here will expose it all and make it apparent. The diy faq instructions will be clearer than how I can describe it

Up, nope, why did you think that?

An NA 6cyl SUV for the Ultimate Driving Experience? Lol.

I do get that BMW is continually pushing the envelope to refine and further manage processes with the use of technology, like in this case.

I wouldnt go as far as it's useless, but a simpler system can and will work with no impact on driving dynamics I can see.

But I dont mind, I say go for it, at least they are pushing the envelope.

But maybe they should have taken away some engineering time from that fan system and put it on the door handle carrier and key cylinder team lol!

If either goes too high, fan goes on. It drops below the set temp,

Having a variable speed fan means not a wit in terms of the driving experience, performance, or anything else the driver will ever notice.
The increased cost from this abortion, the
high failure rate and paying $500 for a part, *that* most people will notice.
It's a classic example of complication for no benefit, except to the
dealer service dept and bottom line.
With the mandates by the Fed to increase mileage for a manufacturer's fleet of cars, having a fan run full speed will discharge the battery sooner which will require the alternator to work harder or longer, which in term will cause the engine to work harder and use more fuel. The corporate mileage will suffer from this.

If you looked at the fuse that controls the pusher fan you will see that it's a 50 amps fuse. That means that the pusher fan is probably the single piece of electrical equipment other than the starter that draw that kind of amperage. Depending on the alternator in the car that can be almost half the energy being produce by an alternator.

Don't know how you arrived at the gas saving of .001 mpg, probably a wild a$$ guess pulled out of your a$$. As for discharging the battery, the fan is connected to the battery directly not to the alternator, so it will discharge the battery. That is why the fan may still run after the engine has been turned off.

As for BMW making money off selling expensive fan, BMW makes their money from selling their cars. Dealers have to stock their inventory so the parts are available to repair cars in a timely manner. It cost money to buy the inventory and it cost money to store the inventory.
