The pump listed on eBay is an in line pump, not a submersible pump like the OE. You will need to find the feed line and connect it to that line. The pump can be fitted with a hose barb. I only threw that out because the original poster was B!TCHin about the cost of an OE pump.

I have notice a new group of owners posting on the forum. Although I commend them on their willingness to fix their X, they are also the type that have champagne taste on a beer budget. It's not just new X owners, I see it on the PORSCHE forums and Lotus forums. Can afford to buy a car, but reluctant to fix it correctly.

I definitely agree with that statement. I just bought my X and am fixing all the B.S. halfassery that the PO had done... People (and some shops) don't do things right very often.

So that would have to be jerry rigged? No thanks for me. I would just buy the oem part.

I'd prefer to buy a new OEM pump at $272 because you get the whole assembly, not just a pump. You get the whole housing, tube, electrical, sender, and pump/sock....You get to replace all of the old brittle plastic and tubes, which is worth the peace of mind and ease of installation, IMO.

You may be able to find a pump the same diameter, length, and output tube/ voltage connector configuration that has a round, same diameter input for a pickup sock as the stock pump, but I haven't found one. I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather spend my time fishing than trying to hunt down a part and jerry rig in order to save a few bucks.
You need a better search engine:

You got it all wrong. Not a new owner by any means and I've been a member much longer than you. I just never post, only read. Sure, I wanted to save $300 in case it could be the filter or if I was missing something else. Now I've confirmed that it is the pump (based on other replies, definitely not yours). I would never even think about trying to make that "universal" pump work. I always buy OEM parts, have no problems with that at all. But thanks for the helpful posts, is that how you get to 3,000?

That one is not listed as compatible with N62, so maybe you should check your search engine too

Want to know how I got to 3000+ post, just read some of my posts. Let me add you to my list of people to ignore so that I don't add to my post count by replying to your posts.

Vehicle: 2005 X5 4.8, 82k miles
Symptoms: Cranks very strong but does not start
Troubleshooting:
- new battery installed a week ago and kept on the trickle charger overnight (consistent 12.5-12.8 V)
- checked fuse #47 (in the glove box)
- checked fuel pump relay K96 (on top/behind glove box fuses) by swapping the working horn relay below it
- used a paper clip in place of the fuel pump relay (pins 30 and 87) but no sound from the pump, car still does not start
- with the key turned to position 2, I do not hear anything at the fuel filler door with a removed cap OR at the back seat where the pump is
- tested the fuel pump connector at the pump, shows 0 V with no key and 11.2 V with key in position 2

Would anything else beyond what I checked above prevent the fuel pump from running (well, besides a dead fuel pump)?

Also, is the fuel pump supposed to make a sound every time the key is turned to position 2? For example, turning the key to position 2, then back to position 0 within a few seconds, then again to 2 and there would be the priming sound every time?

Thanks in advance for any help. And I do realize that I might already have an answer (dead fuel pump) and my questions are a waste of time...

My mechanic swears all X5's have this problem of the fuel pump going out.. mines died at 70k.. had exact symptoms as yours.. fuel pump and filter replaced and car works beautiful..

I know how you got the last 5. So, again, thanks for the multiple helpful posts answering my questions.
