Timing Chain Guide Broke

Anyone have experience repairing a timing chain guide after they have failed? The timing chain jumped the sprocket and there is likely valve damage on one of the heads. Anybody do this repair? Is it worth doing or am I better off with another motor. Appreciate any input.

The repair can be done though I would put it at a high to very high level of difficulty. Since the timing chain jumped a sprocket you won't know how much damage has been done until the engine is apart. The damage can be terminal.

I just did it, but I had the whole engine out and rebuilt the rest of the motor too. It is definitely a big job. I'd probably recommend finding another engine with fewer miles if possible. By the time you either pay a shop for the guide job, or DIY and pay for materials and tools, it's economically comparable to buying a whole 'nother engine. Especially if you're not sure if the valves kissed the pistons.

Yea that's what I thought too. The shop that I am bringing it to wants to check the extent of the damage before I go the other motor route. I am concerned about fixing this engine now, only to have a problem down the line. How much more did you wind up paying to redo the whole motor?

You need to tell us what you have. It is best if you put it into your signature.

What makes you think it jumped?
My guides broke and I drove another 20 kms without any problems, nothing jumped. Now it's all fixed,I have to adjust the camshaft sensor plates yet,but that's another story.

I have a 2006 X5 4.4 W/Sport package. The way I know that the chain jumped is that it occurred on the passenger side bank and if you take off the oil cap you can no longer see the chain on the sprocket, so I know that it jumped.

Holy cow... Well, I have a lot more in my engine than I could have bought one for, and certainly more time and headache. I've lost count of the dollars by now.

If you had a 4.6iS motor you'd have to try to repair. With the 4.4, I'd find another, rebuild it and swap.

What he said. I was lucky enough to find a used one for a decent price, but they're hard to come by.
