Strange noises on my E53 4.8is
i just got me a 2004 E53 4.8is. This is my first V8 car.. i had several BMWs in last 10 years (E30, E34, E39) and E53 was the next logical step hehe. The car is unbelievably powerful, nice interior, nice color, not so thirsty (if you are careful from time to time) BUT i have two noises i do not like and my indy is ensuring me that is nothing... Here is a video where you can her both noises: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZQtWJSaCDw So the first noise: That was first ignition after 12 hr of being stationary. Beneath the car you can hear grinding noise i think is coming from the transmission (correct me if i am wrong). After about a minute the engine stalls (probably oxygen sensor reaching temp limit and changing fuel settings?) and in few moments grinding fades away and does not come back. Other scenario which is not on this video: i start the engine after 12hrs and after 2-3 secs i turn it off.. wait for 5-10 secs and start it again and than there is no grinding noise. My conclusion is that oil is not getting immediately to all places it should... Previous owner said the oil in transmission, transfer box and diffs has never been changed.. so i hope this problem can be solved with simple complete oil change in the drive train? Also in DIS software i am getting a 54C6 error for oil thickness in the xDrive so i really hope oil swap will do the trick. And the second noise (N62 engine): in the video at 0:55s you can hear left side (drivers side), after that right side with knocking and at the end again left side. I think the sound is coming from the right head, something with the valves.. maybe hydraulic lifter? When the engine gets to a normal temperature this sound gets quieter but it does not go away. I don't think it is an alternator issue because it is on the right side, and i don't think it is a/c compressor issue because the sound does not change when i turn it on and off. So my questions are: HELP! |

Hi that first noise , I really have know Idea, but the second, I had the same problem , You have to clean Your CCV to the intake manifold and replace the seals also.
How is the service record on the car? Was the oil changed often? How many miles? You bought a Needy Mistrist, I would 1] Change the spark plugs[NG titanium] 2] change and clean the CCV on both heads and the throttle body[it is easy to do] 3] change the oil with Castrol titanium and BMW filter 4] get some fuel injector clean for the fuel and filler her up and run her for a long drive[after You figure out that other noise. 5]clean the MAS sensor, new air filter. 6] go over all the vehicle and check for leaks[check the alternator seal,if it blows it will dump almost all Your oil ]. The best thing to do is to start at the top work Your way down on the list, but I am sure there will be other problems along the way so hang in there. the other problem with the n62 4.8is is the valve stem seals so that is why I recommend the Castrol titanium oil,it cost more but it is buying You time in Your heads.......

I've got your #2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfjnZyAcWHc I have fixed every leak and I change the oil every 10k. Sound has not not gotten better or worse in the 30,000km I've owned it. The camera makes it sound worse. But same as what you've recorded. I toss in injector cleaner every oil change and have tossed Lucas upper cylinder lube/cleaner at just that last oil change. Will see if that makes a difference over the next few thousand. Not sure that helps, but I guess misery loves company

Did you do anything to make it go away or it just did on its own? As for cold start misfires, I've got that too. Seems to be intermediate lever related. Warm weather now, not a misfire in weeks.

It's not burn any oil now , so that is good. I am dropping her off today to have to alternator seal replaced and the oil pan gasket too...........might as well check the alternator too, It really makes a big difference to have a strong electrical system.

small update
well i have changed oil in the transfer case (with DIS reset and recalibration) and oil and filter in the gearbox. after that i started receiving failsafe messages from my transmission so i did the reset of adaptation values (DIS software) and now i have a NEW gearbox, no more kicking or sudden changes.. it is all smooth..
BUT sound #1 did not change at all. so since it last for only 60 secs i had to rush under the car for a more precise location and i have figured out it is coming from the engine oil pan. so i guess i have a problem with my oil pump. So what i plan on doing: For noise #2 - remove valve cover and will start it for several seconds to see if i can locate the source of the sound (i checked with stethoscope and it is definitely coming from my top right bank) - change seals and rings since cover is of - AND YES electricalserv x5 i have checked CCV and membrane is a bit "open" (1-2cm) so i will change them on both banks For noise #1 - remove oil pan and look for pump problems (i have seen people having loose screws down there!?!) - while oil pan is removed look for plastic debris, maybe my chain guides have broken apart (noise #2) so these steps require money and time so i hope during next several weekends i will be able to do something and I will post results... regards! |

honestly, after many, many hours of research, i think the knocking sound is a bad fuel injector. i'm getting a misfire in cylinder 5 and have been pulling out a wet, black spark plug (oil, maybe fuel, forgot to smell it when i checked) every week. my car would tell me with a lovely blinking CEL and hesitation at low rpm.

Well i have some news... i have visited several indys and one of them told me VANOS is creating the clicking, not the lifter. So i took out connector of the exhaust VANOS solenoid and the clicking faded out BUT i got a loud whining from the oil pan. Now i am thinking VANOS is creating clicking noise because the oil pump is not creating good pressure on idle. Here is a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MoVIcBwIPE Whining occurs only when oil temp is more than 60-70 celsius degrees. When it is cold there is no sound. And another thing is strong vacuum and clicking under oil pan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkNxTkJITYs Any thoughts on this? |
