Transmission Air Duct??

Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum and just picked up a 2001 x5 3.0. I am replacing the radiator/air ducts on my new project and was doing some research and came across a diagram showing the radiator and all the air ducts. My question is do the E53 3.0’s have a air duct to the transmission? I do not see it in my X5 and have searched and found very little information about it online. If mine is missing should I replace it? Thanks for the help.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the reply. That's the diagram I am talking about. The part I am not sure on is #4 (tube looking piece). What is that and where should I be looking for it?

It appears on the diagram that this tube runs near the front upper section of the wheel well and is aimed at the trans along the frame rails. I would check and see if this guy is mounted towards the side, in front of the wheel wells just behind the front bumper.

It appears to be a air tube to pull air from the high pressure area near the Radiator and move it through the engine compartment to allow cooler air to hit the trans for some reason. I am sure there are owners who can explain in more detail of the actual function of the ducts. HD towing? Over engineering?

If you roll underneath the left front corner (driver side) you should see this plastic tube like duct. Based on the diagram it is round not square like the E53 brake ducts.

Here are a few shots from ECS's site showing the part. I wasn't going to really believe there was a transmission air duct when I saw this thread, then I saw the diagram. Looked it up for mine and it's supposed to be there too. I'll see if I can find it on mine and take some pics.

Search 51717113545 - 51717113545 - AIR DUCT - ES#128833

I just went to look and if it's there, it isn't visible. I imagine it would have to be a long duct too to make it back to the transmission. The thought of a duct to cool it sounds like a good idea (I have a few long tows this year to make). If anyone can find pics of install/routing, please post.

Look here in post #6
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...on-cooler.html

Is this the duct right under the frame rail on the right side? Looks like it. The cleaner/larger ducts are the brake ones.

Well, I found that one in the pics I posted above. Takes off from the centre air channel on the bumper. Mine has a rubber/plastic flange at the opening that isn't lined up properly. I have to pull the bumper to fix it. Awesome. Thank you thread....

image of front end with bumper removed. The duct is located on right side of the image below next to the square brake duct.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the help. I have noticed that all of you who have it have the V8. I can't seem to find anything about it being on the I6 model. Anyone with the 3.0 know if they have it?

Thanks
