beast overheated,
lifted bonnet , cars running sweet as usual , thermo viscous fan spinning as normal , turned car off and left it , water level was ok. and oil level ok ( checked when cooled) checked codes with scanner 1.41. came up with nothing , is there anything these engines are prone to doing when warm , or am I just worrying too much? update............... just to update you guys, fired beasty up , sat there idled for 30 mins (while I was cleaning garden) temp gauge read 1/2 went on motorway shortly after , got about a mile or 2 and the gauge started creeping up , right up nearly to the red, but not quite, pulled car over opened bonnet, NO fan on front of radiator put heating on , full and hot , temp came down , limped car home , turned heating off, outside house, gauge increased, still no fan either fan or sensor , I read codes again this morning , says nothing about a temp sensor failing is there a way to test the front fan, now it spins freely, not seized,

Firstly, 24 isn't hot mate. I drag my 2.5 ton caravan in 35 degree temps and the needle barely moves even hauling up hills.
You got something going on and unless dealt with could be fatal for the engine. Wish I had some insights for you but I don't I'm sorry. Hopefully the petrol engine gurus will be along soon

A blow head gasket does not automatically mean the end of the engine.

you'd have coolant loss if it was a BHG

A stuck-closed Tstat. failed fan clutch, or blockage in cooling system. That's it.
