N62TU Eccentric Shaft Gear Damage - WWYD?

So, PO hired a shade-tree mechanic (read: shady), who did a number on the driver's side eccentric shaft gear surfaces. There appear to be three broken teeth. Engine operated well enough that I didn't notice anything off when I test drove the vehicle.

The $1M question: What would you do?

I'm looking at $200 for a used cylinder head (to get the replacement shaft), and about $1500 in tools to be able to replace the part.

I really don't want to get into those "while you're in there" items like VSSs. I was hoping to put that off for a little while, as it's not called for based on engine symptoms/smoke. Then again, if I have the shaft removed, I imagine it becomes far easier to replace the VSSs. (at least on that one side)

Words of sympathy and/or encouragement are appreciated, in addition to your sage advice.

Does that gear go all the way around or possible to remove and replace the gear 180° out so it uses a different range of teeth.

Interesting idea, but no - the eccentric shaft is oriented one way specifically. Plus the Valvetronic Servo acts on both sides of the gear faces, as it rapidly increases or decreases valve lift based on throttle input.

It's looking like I'm going to replace the shaft with a used one, based on my notes above. I'm still trying to figure out what else needs to go on my shopping list.

OK, so I overestimated on tools, it's more like $1000. And I know someone will suggest the rental option, but my problem there is this project is likely to sit for stretches at a time, and I don't want to rack up rental fees.

On the plus side, there's a good chance I'll be able to document an eccentric shaft swap, which based on what I can tell hasn't been posted before.

I've been where you are. Might be landscaping company, roofer or whatever but every once in a while I find one that doesn't do as 'promised'. That goes with S$#% happens and this to will pass.
