Just a click when I turn the key...

Would appreciate ideas on this one.

For awhile, and about once a month, I'll turn the key and I get the loud sound of the starter solenoid, but zero cranking. Not even trying. Remove key, try again and starts immediately.

Now it's happening maybe twice a week.

Never a code.

Always starts real strong and battery and alternator always reads real good (12.6 V sitting and 13.7V with engine running).

Starter motor going south?

Ok. I'll check. I think you mean the engine to chassis ground?

I think you are on the right track. Maybe you'll be lucky and it'll be a ground or it is the starter.

To determine if you have a bad ground, you can get a battery jumper cable and connect it to negative jump terminal by the fender and the other end to the engine block. See if the engine cranks over immediately without a click.

But this is what is making me a little batty - it ALWAYS (knock on wood) starts the 2nd time. Doesn't matter what I do, including nothing. And I can't predict the rare times it doesn't start.

I will inspect and clean the grounds - it certainly won't hurt...

An update - grounds seemed ok, but cleaned them up for good luck. Also discovered the terminals on the solenoid were all wobbly (as in not secured to the case). Wondering if this is the result of years of heat cycling or over tightening by a PO... Anyway, decided it was suspect enough to replace - ordered the Bosch reman unit and installed it this weekend. Definitely has a different tone while cranking. Hope that is good...
