Location of Diesel Fuel filter

Hi

Im looking to clarify where the Diesel Fuel filter is on a 2002 3.0 Diesel E53.

Is it under the car, the canister next to item 23 here RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

or

In the engine bay, item 1 here :

Thanks

I'm sorry to tell you that it is under the car just in front of the tank on the left side. Also covered by a load of plastic. Not the easiest thing to replace either. Ideally the largest plastic moulding, is the one that needs to be removed in order to get at it. It is possible to replace it by without removing all the associated panels and bending some, after removing bolts, to get at it. Well at least that's how I do it on my 2005 x5 3.0 D. Don't be tempted to drill out rivets under tank as you can easily puncture the tank. Hope this helps, but not the answer you want...

If it's the same drawing that I'm looking at it is the fuel pump and connected after it and positioned in front on the car is the filter number 11 in drawing. That fuel pump is the second electrical pump in the system. There is another in the tank. BTW if the one in the tank fails, the engine will still run until the tank gets to about quarter full and then stops. This is because the in tank pump is used to transfer fuel from one side to the other side.

Hi

Its item no 1, part number 13327787825 at RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

According to this diagram for my car (based on VIN) it says its the fuel filter...which is why I have been confused..

Was there a change in location of the fuel filter on diesel models or is this definately a fuel pump ???

Cheers

Gary

Hi Gary,
Nothing to be confused about! You car is 2002 and you are correct in saying the fuel filter is in the engine bay and very easy to access and replace.
Fuel filter position was changed from 2004 in the facelift and this is what member mbmw is talking about and obviouslly didnt realize yours is a 2002 prefacelift!
