Meh, it's not that bad. I've swapped headlights that need coding before without issue... worst case you have to pay an indy $50 to code the swap. If you are swapping same for same you rarely have to code it.
BMW's aren't for everyone that's for sure... I rarely recommend them to people who aren't DIY'ers (does not apply to you). But they drive better than anything else I've driver... including much more expensive vehicles.
I do understand people's frustration with them at times though... they like to try and nickel and dime you after they are out of the warranty period. I've accepted it though (had 10+ bimmers) for the way the car drives/handles/feels and even smells. I've found each chassis has it's own particular smells.
