Car shut down while driving at freeway speeds

2005 4.8

Just cruusing along at 50 + mph and I suddenly lose power steering. Fortunately I'm able to pull over safely.

Car starts back up fine but then immediately dies or idles really hard and rough at low rpm and then dies shortly after.

I'm thinking fuel pump?

I'm thinking you are probably right.

Do you have fuel pressure at the rail? Isn't there a schrader valve you can push down to verify?

I know how to quickly access the fuel pumps on e30, e39, e36, e46, but never done one on e53. If the pump is just starting to fail (very common failure on BMW's) sometimes you can tap it with something and get it working again for awhile. Done that many times to get a car back home or something.

Unfortunately I do not have tools with me besides the few factory ones in the trunk. I just accessed the pump and gave it a decent two around and no dice.

The car starts right up strong but then immediately sputters and slowly dies within a few seconds.

I have a locally sourced OE pump on order for 298.

Is the fuel pump one of those things that could work better once it cools down in a few hours? I'm like 5 miles from home

I was gonna check the schrader valve but the stupid engine cover blocks it and it's held in by torque head bolts

Is it possible for the fuel pump to go bad but the car to still be able to still start up momentarily then die?

yes, Residual fuel in the rail. Injectors open fuel falls into the intake sucked in on cranking....Starts for 3-5 seconds.

Question: How much fuel does your gauge show?

It better to work on it when the tank is almost empty. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank.

Just get it flatbed home.
