Saying Goodbye to the E53 in a few hours
I just spent $600 replacing front control arms, and it's about 1k miles away from being due for Inspection II... I can no longer justify the expense. On my way to ATL yesterday, I got a "DSC Inactive" message. Reset the DSC computer, but it kept on going "inactive" once I approached 70-80mph. The engine oil pan is leaking, the transmission is slipping, etc. I have loved this car, maintained it to a level most people would consider insane, and will miss it. I was able to get an "emergent appointment" at a BMW dealership in Atlanta at 7:30 this morning - and I've all but decided that I'm going to trade it in on a 2008 E70 3.0si... maybe keep it for a year or two, and then dump it.

move forward, I went through the same thing with my 4.6is, I went out and found a 4.8is that need a bit of TLC and lucky for me it worked out................good luck.

Update: at the end of the day I couldn't do it. Not just because of the odd attachment I have to the E53, but A) Global Imports BMW sucks, B) they couldn't provide service records for the "locally owned" E70 I wanted, and C) Global Imports are idiots. They kept insisting the SAS needed replacing (for $500+), even when I suggested it probably just needed to be recalibrated considering I'd had suspension work and an alignment from a regular-Joe mechanic on Tuesday (I was in a hurry and my Indy or my usual dealer couldn't fit me in.) The SA fought me on it, told me it couldn't be calibrated.. Then two hours later came to talk to me and sheepishly said "oh yeah, we recalibrated the SAS, and it seems to be fine now."
