All depends on what you use the X for.
Are you tracking the X on a road course and looking to pick up a few 10ths per lap? Do you have a manual trans, or an auto with software that increases RPM shift points? If so, cams are for you. Do you drive the X as a DD (almost ALL driving done below 4k RPM)? If so, you won't notice the cams. The rub here is 5klb DD street vehicle use torque in the 2 to 4k RPM zone, light road course vehicles use HP in the upper RPM range.

I would look into ZHP cams as well.

Cams won't give you more "grunt", that's low end torque (need a couple more cylinders for that).
Cams give you high RPM HP.

Do you really want to go down that slippery slope? Once you change the cam you will want to change the exhaust, perhaps install a performance chip. Don't know of anyone tracking a X5, a M3 or M5 maybe but a X5???

Exactly my point Upallnight.
The time to decide how much grunt you want is prior to purchase. I always purchase 3 pedal vehicles, drove the V8 and was sold on the 50% torque increase vs the 6 cyl.

I'm not tracking it, I have an e30 m for that, I did the shark injector, just wanted to see if anyone had any experience in the x5, I'll look into supercharging. Thanks!

I'd say after the Shark, rebuild the Vanos to restore some low end power - if you already did intake and exhaust, after that the next thing would be headers and/or cams - then you're pretty much out of HP upgrades until you S/C it
