E53 hood service position

Hi,
Standard hood open position in E53 is not too comfortable to perform any repairs. Is it possible to open it to service position? I mean like this:

Yes it's possible, you will have to disconnect the hood struts to do it.

Not that hard to disconnect.

The struts have socket ends and the hood and car body have ball ends.

Part of the socket ends are clips. You will see the seams when you look at them. Pry the clips out with a very thin pry tool and then the ball and socket connection will simply pull apart.

But get ready to catch the hood. One strut will not hold it. And when both are out, the hood will have some really shocking weight to it, especially if you try to hold it from the side.

So it's impossible to lock the hood in this position without using stick or something?

That's right, it is not stable in the service position. I prefer to tie it off with a piece of tie-down strap - seems less likely to be in the way than a stick and unlikely to get knocked over.
