Antifreeze smell and now antifreeze consumption

OK, this is worrysome.

My 2005 3.0d X5 has always smelled like antifreeze, at the exhaust. But until now, it had no antifreeze consumption. About a week ago, I noticed that the antifreeze level was low, so I added about half a litre. Yesterday, when I checked again, it was lowish (the top of the indicator was just below the hole top lip) so I added some more, the indicator almost lifted to its maximum height. This morning, the top of the indicator is again, near the top of the hole. I can't see any leak from the car, while it is standing.

Am I in for an expensive head gasket job?

Total mileage is about 200,000 km.

Buy a head gasket test kit to determine if you have a head gasket problem. Pretty sure you probably do.

You could also manually pressurize the system and look for the leak. There are kits to do this inexpensively. Of course if it is the head gasket leaking internally you won't see it. Good luck.

Thanks! I do not think I can get this kit in Greece, though.

Leak down test can help you determine what is going on without tearing down the motor. My personal knowledge of diesels is limited to those with glow plugs as you can access the combustion chamber through the plug hole in the same manner as a conventional engine.

This leak test shows how much is lost, where it goes, and provides a great indicator of engine health.

Are you seeing any white smoke out the exhaust or loss of power?
