Steering Wheel Cover Replacement

So I finally ordered a replacement steering wheel cover for my 2004 X5 Sport to replace the current one that is delaminated. I've done some research and found the process of removing the airbag to be able to swap out this cover... but the whole airbag thing has me nervous.

I need some reassurance (and/or tips) that if I disconnect the battery and ensure all bodily static electricity is dissipated, that there is no chance this airbag is going to blow up in my face once I disconnect/reconnect the leads.

Thanks!

You do NOT have to disconnect the airbag in order to remove the trim. Disconnect the battery to be safe. I didn't have to disconnect either to remove the steering wheel trim.

Really?? That's GREAT news! I thought it all had to come out to replace that plastic trim.

FANTASTIC news. Thanks, tmv!

with tmv, I replaced my steering wheel without disconnecting the battery - I just pulled the airbag fuse in the glovebox

A few weeks ago, a neighbor deployed all the airbags (8 or 10) while working under the console of his daughters '09 VW Touareg. Vehicle was taken away on a flatbed, yet to see it return. I would think it's a total loss!

Hopefully they weren't Takata airbags.
