Expansion tank and ATF thermostat below it

I've got the expansion tank out and I bought a new transmission thermostat but can't get it out of the housing it sits in. Is there a trick to this? Thanks

I got it! I used a pair of small long nose vise grips to grab the lip since the top was broken off.

Been there, got the t-shirt.

I used a loop of MIG welding wire through what was left of the X in the top to yank it out.

Glad it's out, that can be a pain to extract. .
