anyone ever cut/splice Oxygen sensor wires?

The Bosch 2 front sensors are cheeper than the back 2.

the wires are longer on the back and have a female end. Anyone ever use front sensors and just spliced onto the old longer wires for the back/post cat sensors?

THANKS

Can't say I've done exactly what you are describing... but I have routinely purchased generic Bosch 4 wire o2 sensors and spliced the OEM harness onto them with satisfactory results on other BMW's. Usually saves $40 or so per sensor.

Thanks
retailer on Ebay is telling me they are "interchangeable", no big deal to splice and shrink wrap. My concern was splice/length of wire changing resistance that might be measured by the check system computers.

You can do it no problem. I have done it a few times for the exact reasons you are thinking. Just solder and shrink wrap and you will be fine. They are all the same other than wire connector and length.

I'm not sure I'd agree 100% with folks. I know in theory it should work but The reason I have never done it is that some cars don't respond well so I never went down the path and the difference in cost doesn't seem worth the extra effort to cut and splice and deal with possible issues

For my 2001 3.0i,
pre-cat = Bosch 13477
post-cat = Bosch 15109
universal (for both pre and post-cat) = Bosch 15738

Since the Bosch universal part is same for pre- and post-cat, it seems that yes, your plan will work fine.

I have spliced in universal ones on other cars with no problems. I know people report issues, but I assume that is only because they did something wrong (assuming they used the right brand - e.g., a Bosch universal would be fine here).

One tip on the splicing: don't cut all 4 wires at the same length. If you do that, you'll have a mega bulge since all 4 connectors will be lined up. If you stagger them so there is no overlap, you'll instead get a longer and thinner mini bulge. Also, put the heat shrink tube (to go around all 4) on there before making the individual connections (of course ... obvious, but easy to forget).
