4.8is oil filter kit - quick question.
![]() I've done a couple of oil changes already, but what's the small rubber ring for? The crush washer goes on the oil pan bolt, the big rubber ring goes on the oil filter, but where does the small rubber ring go?

On my N62 545i that small oring is for the small oil canister drain bolt. Quite confident that is what it is for you. I open the canister drain bolt first to get some more oil drained before opening the canister. Keeps it from dumping all over the place.

Haha... I think you're right. I think I have a habit of unscrewing the entire oil canister first using the big socket instead of using the hex key to drain it first.

Ditto...it's for the 6mm reservoir lid's drain. Those of us with the N62 engines...our oil filter & reservoir is beneath the engine...not up top like the decades of earlier BMW engines. They don't need the extra ability to drain the reservoir separately...they can just undo the reservoir lid and it's contents drains downward into the pan.
