Coolant Leak Help!
Hello. Trying to get this leak pinpointed. I'm going to go ahead and replace the sensor seal since it's so easy to get to, might as well. Mechanic at Bimmer suggested replacing the transfer plate behind that metal box looking thing (heater core?)He also said after that I may get away with just replacing all the seals. As anyone ever dealt with this or know where I can get said seals? Thanks!

Hey Sean,
The metal box thing is an oil cooler - oil is diverted through the core of this unit (correctly called a heat exchanger) and coolant is run through another set of galleries in the core, cooling the oil on the way. There are four ports on this puppy; two oil (in and out) and two coolant (also in and out). The oil being cooled is sometimes engine oil, sometimes transmission fluid - depends on the exact model you have. Have a look at this: - RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog Your leaky seal might be part #12 - the x-ring (like an o-ring but it has an "X" profile). HTH.. :-)

I was worried about it being tough to get off, but doesn't look too bad. Thanks for the link!

You can drain the coolant, then remove the heat exchanger without removing the oil lines - you might need to release some of the oil line clamps the get enough flex but it should be do-able.

On my 4.4i I was able to remove the heat exchanger without removing any oil lines clips etc.
Pretty easy procedure.

I've done this repair.
If you google the part number you might find my post. Make sure and get the proper xrings. They are not orings. I replaced the xrings and the plastic mounting plate too that was cracked. Pretty simple job. |
