Torn CV joint boot, not sure which way to go.

03 4.6is with 105k miles. Just discovered front left wheel area covered in grease. Additional problem is I'm on my vacation and have to drive 750 miles back.
I'm very experienced with my 5 series and done a lot of stuff on them (TC guides and such) but never CV joint.

My question is, considering the mileage, is it advisable to do the whole assembly or just boot kit and which brands you guys used.

Thanks!

GKN boots. Gkn is the original manufacturer. Reboot if you can. If it isn't making noise it is probably still fine.
Driving 750 miles on the highway doesn't seem like a problem to me. Try to avoid things that would introduce dirt.

GKN is the safest bet for boots and axles. I have researched this topic to death since I have two cars that are leaking.

I have found people here on this forum that have used Cardone axles and AutoZone Duralast with zero issues. I also found more that have done the same and had problems (leaks, vibration). I can't recall the members name, but he has 40k miles on his new non reman cardones. Maybe luck, maybe more skill with the install.

If you are going through all the trouble to reboot it you might as well go and put a new CV joint on it.

Couple of bucks more than a GKN reboot kit but a lot less than a cheap made in China axle.

Guys, thank you all for your responses.
Considering that I'll have to drive about $750 miles on torn boot, I'm strongly considering the complete GKN CV joint assembly.
I found it for $199 delivered from reputable online place with 2 year warranty.
I've also read 37 page long thread and it's going to be very helpful.
Thanks all!

I bought one of those Febest joints to look at. I liked the idea, but I found it scary. I would not recommend them. Most joints are ok unless the owner Ignored the problem until it started making noise.

Mine both went at 60k miles give or take couple of months between each side going, on the one side i went with febi, and on the other side when i took it to another mechanic to sort out he went with the gkn...

Took the one mechanic about 1hour to replace/refit with the aid of an assistant, and the other mechanic took just under 15mins to remove it( i was there watching), and and I am sure the same amount of time to refit( wasnt around to watch )

If the joints are damaged why change them?

Replace the hole Axle

I got mine from Napa and the hole rebuild was only about $60 a side and I didn't need to mess with putting on a new boot (vey messy).
