The X5 is in the trans shop today (ZF filter/gasket kit arrived yesterday).
Will soon see if this results in any improvements to transmission performance.
If not, I'll still have peace of mind knowing that the fluid and filter have been renewed.

I did mine a month ago, tranny is running smooth , the old fluid was cooked and the filter was 10 years old, couldn't go wrong doing the service

At only 45k miles?!
So much for "sealed for life" fluid............I'm assuming mine has the original fluid and filter, and it's done a tad over 100k miles.

Great to hear - thanks.

I got myself a YouShop address in the USA a few years back but about the same time the parts places in the USA started shipping internationally, so I don't use it much. Gotten a few bits from ECS Tuning but nothing from Pelican - yet.

Is your trans the 6HP26Z? If so, same as mine...

Fluid is the big question here in NZ - I don't see ZF LifeGuard 6 at SuperCheapAuto!

The Aussie's seem to use Nulon which carries all the right ratings and even mentions ZF on the documentation.

What are you using in your drain and refill?

Yes, the 6HP26 trans was specific to the 4.8is - I believe it was the first X5 model fitted with that transmission.
I didn't do the drain & refill - got the professionals to do a full transmission service with flush (using the trans pump, not an external rig).
They used the genuine ZF Lifeguard fluid, of which 9 litres was pumped through my transmission during flushing/filling.
I supplied the genuine ZF filter/gasket kit to try and reduce the overall cost of the work.
The shop also replaced the plastic connector for the mechatronics wire loom, which was leaking slightly (the o-rings were worn flat!).
This is a highly recommended preventative maintenance item for these gearboxes.

As for post-service performance, I haven't yet driven the car from stone cold to see if it's any different, but after driving it warm, it already seems a whole lot smoother, with a better shifting action.

Cheers

Transmission performs much better from cold now - as demonstrated this morning - so I'm happy about that.
The car is now at a professional detailing shop for a 'Stage 3' clean and polish - will be interesting to see how much better it looks when that's all done.

Nice sport seats. The only thing I like more about my comfort seats is all the adjustments for the back...really keeps me going on long trips.
But I think I'd give that up for some nice looking sport seats ....I'm talking like they're so easy to find....
