oil viscosity??

What kind of oil viscosity does the stealership use on the x5?

I'm thinking of putting in 5w40 redline full synthetic, replies would be great. Any cons to that?

In the US, the BMW dealer uses Castrol Synthethic 5W-30....5W-40 should be fine especially in warmer climates.

Jaba,
The Stlr is almost certainly putting in 5W-30, syn...maybe a Castrol PrivLabel.

You may get a couple dozen reasons why or why not, to use 5W-40.

I use the multi-40 and sometimes even the multi-50 in summer.

Read this link, from this site, done by Withidl, a very knowledgeable poster...tells you all you need to know, then you can decide for yourself. Redline is v.good brand, though, imo.

Well, if you use the "BMW Synthetic motor oil" just look at the bottle....it is made by Castrol----Wayne, NJ

Agree with MD, Redline (from California) is a great brand.

Ah, Fiona, my Lassie,
I do my part: all 4 Scoots and 2 of me 3 cars run on nothing but Castrol.
(Yeah, the M'cycles do fine on "car oil"!)

I keep Mobil1 in the Vette, at changes, though I top up with Castrol in a more viscous rating than the 5W-30 the Ol'General prescribes.

I have a thou shares of BP, too. Closed at 70 and change today...wish I woulda bought more, when I did a few years ago.

Keep working hard, F!

Thanks for the replies and help provided.

At Super Autobacs today, I checked out some of the prices...

Redline is $9.99 a quart
Mobil 1 (full syn) is $5.99
Royal Purple is $5.99

I know redline is a really good brand (atf, power steering fluid etc) but I've never tried their motor oil. I've been using Mobil 1 and have been satisfied with it. Is the extra $4 worth it though? I tend to believe not and I don't think it wont make THAT much of a difference. On the other hand, I haven't tried royal purple either. I plan to do an oil change every 7500 since I hit 120mph every so often.

Jaba,
Mobil1, and any/every top brand Syn is exc. oil, imo.

Don't beat yourself up...use what you want, but these cars are not TopFuel Drag cars that are designed to run for 60 seconds with full power for <5 secs.

If you like Mobil1, it is Titz stuff. Hit a WalMart and buy it by the big jug, on sale for about 3+bucks per qt.
