A couple questions about my new E53

First off, new user here, but been on another bmw forum for 9 years. Hi everyone. I recently got an E53, formerly an E46 owner. I have a few questions.

1: It came missing two climate control buttons. Is there something supposed to be under these or is it just the cap? I don't know if I just need new caps or what. I can see the light straight through and no indication of a type of switch/spring in the hole.

2: I have the non DSP widescreen nav on mine. I ordered an aux in adapter for it for now. I'm looking at getting the Eonon replacement for this to get a2dp, updated nav, usb, etc. Do I need to do anything to prevent losing any OBC functions? It looks like all settings for it are controlled through the nav unit itself and not adjustable with the steering wheel stick. Is there any issue with this?

3: One angel was burnt out. So I bought some 3.5W cree LED replacements. I can see them at night with the HIDs off, but that's about it. I'm wanting to order the large 20W cree LED replacements for it now. Similar to the MTecs. Will these let me see my angels in the day?

Oh one more thing. My bluetooth sounds great to other people, but sounds like absolute crap through the speakers. Is there a fix for this until I get my new head unit? Everything else sounds great through the speakers, just not bluetooth calls.

I would get the Dynavin before that Eonon. There is another choice as well but I can not recall the name. There is pretty big threat on the Dynavin that may interest you.

Why did you sell the e46?

What are the advantages of the Dynavin vs the Eonon? Also link to thread if you can. I can get the Eonon for $325, which seems pretty reasonable for everything it does. I'm not wanting to spend a ton if the advantages are marginal.

Also, I didn't sell it persay. A ditch bought it after I hit black ice and even after correcting the slide to get me straight, the momentum still put me into a ditch.

I have played with the volume as I thought that was the problem . It was at max, but even at minimum and everywhere in between it still sounds the same.

What about the people without NAV? What do they have to control the OBC? Am I able to install that as an option when I delete the NAV? I'm aware of how to program them to the cluster, but thanks for the info anyway. I didn't know what order you selected would be how they show up. The only features I'm really would like are range, mpg, and average speed. Range is automatic and wouldn't be affected, biggest thing I'm concerned about. Speed I could live without, but it's nice. Mpg I would like to reset, for historical and trip. Bottom line, if I can keep it with switching to a better nav/audio setup I'd like to. If not, I can live without it. Alsk, would one of thise cigarette liggter radio preset saver deal work to save those settings with the battery disconnected?

What is the volume setting on your phone? That setting can affect what comes through the speakers.

If you have Nav...the display for the OBC is the Nav monitor. Remove it and you lose the ability to set/reset/start/stop/adjust any of the OBC features. BTW, you have to manually program the OBC features to appear in the cluster's display...the order you select them, is the order they will appear when you press the BC button on the turn indicator stalk.

You can NOT set/reset/start/stop/adjust any of the OBC features from the turn indicator stalk...you can only call whatever feature you programmed...to appear in the display to see what it is....you have to use the default display for the OBC to make any adjustments...and that would be either the MID or the Nav monitor.

Of up I program any OBC features into the cluster's display...if you remove the Nav...again you will lose the ability to make any adjustments...and if you lose electrical power long enough...the cluster will also lose the OBC programming. Thus, you would eventually lose that info when changing the battery or powering the vehicle down for any specific electrical work that requires disconnecting the battery cables for any length of time.

To program OBC features to appear in the cluster display...and call up by pressing the BC button on the turn indicator stalk...
  • Press & hold the turn stalk's BC button until PROG appears in the cluster's display
  • Select the OBC features you want to appear by using the Nav monitors select knob...the order you select them will be the order they get called up when pressing the stalk
  • When you've finished selecting what you want to appear...save your selection using the MEMORIZE prompt

I doubt it, due to the ability to transfer light of the AE ring design. It'll be brighter but won't look like the modern bimmers, unless you replace the AE with LED rings

I'm missing the temp up on the passenger side and the floor button. Do I just need the caps or is there something underneath them? Because there is nothing in the hole right now.

I'll probably give the 20Ws a try. Only $20 for them and if they're at least as bright as oem, but white, I'll be happy. My current ones are white, but nkt as bright as oem. I wish they could be as bright as the ccfls I installed on my e46, but that would involve going to aftermarket housings, so I'll just make due with what I can in the stock housings.

If you don't have the Nav monitor...the MID is the display for the OBC for those with the high cluster & high MID. The MID allows you to set/reset/start/stop/adjust all the OBC functions.

Some have wired their MID to extend over to the glovebox to keep the OE OBC operational when upgrading with aftermarket audio components.

And since I have the nav monitor, is this not an option? Or am I able to locate one and use it in place of the nav screen?

I'll let someone else chime in who has done it, but if you need a MID for non DSP with OBC I have a good one. Some clown had replaced the one in my X5 with it and My truck HAS DSP so I had to order (dig on ebay) to find one. Going to keep an eye on this thread to see how it all works out.

I'm not sure if the harness for the Nav monitor has the same type of connectors as the MID.

The quickest way to find out (unless someone who knows and chimes in)...is to look up any e38/e39/e53 MID to Nav upgrade. Somewhere along the way, either an image or a description of the harness' end where it attaches to the MID and Nav should be mentioned or pictured.
