2004 x5 Died on the highway

Good morning.
I had an odd experience this morning. While driving to work. I noticed the battery indicator above the "Service Engine" light was on. A few miles later, A message appeared on the display, something like "going into safe mode" and then some other stuff. Within a 1/2 mile I had to pull car over to side of road. The car lost power and eventually nothing would work. I had dim interior light. Car would not turn over, windows would not go down, automatic locks would hardly work.
Any advise would be appreciated. I'm leaning toward bad battery or and alternator issue. Thank you in advance for reply's.
Jay

You probably have a bad alternator. Get the electrical system checked for proper charging. Depending on the age of the battery if it's over 5 years you will want to change this with the alternator repair. These X5s are finicky when the proper voltage is not provided in the vehicle.

same happened to me once, i was coming back home from work one day, i would signal to the right and the green indicator just stayed (instead of flicking indicating its working) so i pulled over to the lane that went out the freeway and i thought to restart the car, car wouldnt turn back on, had to get it towed.. batt/alternator needs change

Probably not the issue, but make sure your serpentine belt is ok. Get the gold card out....
