Oil Pressure Error - Oil Sensor Trigger

Can the oil pressure error be trigged by a bad oil sensor...

See 1st post and subsequent followup.

To sum it up, I believe it was the oil sensor.
Since the 1st incident, it has come up 2 more times.
Yesterday, driving all day. Then stopped for 20 minutes. Started back up and got oil pressure error. Shut it down....checked oil level, started back up. No errors and another 1hr + drive back home.

So in total, since the 1st incident, 2X low oil and 1X oil pressure.
The oil sensor is on my todo list -- just need to finish my spring sh1t list ontop of pressure washing the exterior of the house and all that sch1tz. However, don't want to be throwing parts at it, without a good direction. I feel it's just the oil level sensor but don't see how this would have trigged the low oil pressure error..Then again, maybe it's just ~electricals~ that trickle effect

What engine is this?

Oil pressure is a different switch, if we are talking 3.0.

There is an oil pressure "switch" (#12):

RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

and an oil level "sender" (#14):

RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

If you are leaking, CCV can lead to oil coming out of places it should not...again on a 3.0.

4.4
Not leaking a drop. Has never leaked except for 2X. Once on a repair and bad gasket on timing case. The latter, was the lower oil pan gasket.

I'm well aware they are different parts. Just comes and goes. More of a annoyance than nothing - especially when the ~gongs~ go off and the wifey is texting me what is this and that.....

Oil pressure is not something I'd want to be guessing about. I think I'd throw a sensor at it just to know it was a new OE sensor and if it was triggering the warning, something is wrong with the engine.

You could probably ohm out your current sensor if you can find the spec for it. That way you diagnose it before buying the part.

Thanks for posting. I have a BIL with a 330ci that is experiencing similar issues. Will direct him to this. Have been telling him to replace the level sensor for years... though I didn't realize it might be causing his driveability issues.

FWIW, just recently got the SES light. Figured I'd just swing by the indy to have him scan it - assuming emissions whenever I was passing by his part of the hood . Happened to fill up tank the following day and the light went out...

Then SES started occasional flicker this weekend, so that was not a good sign. Same day, misfire, engine running rough at times...

Dropped it off at the Indy. I'll let him smoke it out and figure out if it's a intake issue or coilpack. Had him do the sensor while he was in there. Doesn't BS and charge me a diag fee so it's all good. When I can avoid it, I don't like touch the plate ;-/

Oil Pressure is not monitored by the engine management (SES) light.

Your car monitors oil pressure with a red light, and oil level with a yellow light. Neither light reports to the engine management system.

OT, but would anyone know if the DME logs the low oil error.

Indy just called me (I trust him). I know it must have come on in the cluster at least 4 times. Maybe 5. He's not seeing any codes in this...
