Just feel the airbags and you'd know straight away. Raise the car a little so you can get to them and see which one is soft and deflated. I'm pretty certain it is not the compressor as it has a temperature sensor and will switch off when working for too long, hence why the message appears on display.

Ive found the relay isn't working on the compressor. Would this deflate both and explain the bang? It's going up in the air tommorow so I'll take your advice and give them a squeeze

There are two types of bangs, one is when the airbag pops (very rare) and it's very loud. The other is the pressure valve on the compressor opening to release the excess pressure...it's not loud but very clear and sound just like it says on the tin
Either one of them will trigger the warning message on the dash and results in the car lowering itself but not deflating the airbags completely (other than the punctured one of course).

Update. Now seem to have the pump work intermittently. Comes on when I open the door and garage says its runs after its closed. Hasn't changed the airbag yet but could this be due to it not being a sealed system. Ie. The pump will not work correctly until it feels the pressure of a sealed system. Until the airbag is fixed ?

To be honest I've never come across an "intermittently" working pump. The pump does not send air directly to the airbags, it fills up the reservoirs which in turn send the air to the airbags. If the warning message appears then the pump should not come on until the system is reset via software (or a long drive, depending on the fault And that it has been fixed). Reset via software will force the pump on and it will keep working until it overheats and goes back to "safety mode", if you let it do this for too long then the pump will lose efficiency with time due to excessive wear on the piston and you'll get an expensive new issue to solve. My advise is to raise the car, both sides, reset the system and listen to/feel the airbags on both sides...you can even spray some soap water on them to make it visually easier if you like.
If you don't have the software then I recommend getting one (I have 3 different ones myself ) The one that is the easiest to use, quickest to "get" and communicates well with this system in particular....not to mention the cheapest, is the iVini App (previously BMWhat). It's available for Android and Iphone, just check it in the store. You'll need the cable though, that might take a few days to arrive. Good luck. Ps. I have no affiliation with Ivini app, it's just very handy to have on the phone for quick scans and resets of simple things.

Stupid question maybe, but does the compressor turn on every time you start the car, in order to fill the reservoir and pressurize the system?

No such thing as a stupid question buddy. If the system is solid, no leaks, good sensors etc then no, the compressor will only start with the ignition once in a while. If you do hear it start every time you start the car then there is a leak somewhere.

Thanks Awntchi, I appreciate it, I never seem to hear my compressor, but then I've had most of it replaced over my 14 years of ownership, some things twice. Sounds like you no longer have to worry about that.

You can lift up the boot cover (expose the spare wheel) and start the car...I'm sure you'll hear it then. It's good that you can't hear under "normal" conditions though....means there is still some mileage left on it
I didn't mind changing the airbags, I just had enough with the sensors and compressor failing all the time because of the airbags :/ BMW X5 4.8iS 2005
