Does generic OBDII code reader erase BMW codes?

Hey Lads,

So I have been having running issues with my X5 for a while. Car would stall every so often, crap idle sometimes, etc.

Finally got around to replacing the seals in my VANOS as it was the most likely culprit and the seals were definitely hard like plastic. Got that all done, cleared codes from the ECU and noticed immediately the improvement with much better performance, much more stable drop to idle, no crappy idle moments, etc. I ran the truck for a few miles and then I got 2 codes, P2098 and P0505.

One is for a post cat condition and the other is associated with an idle issue which I have been having (truck sounds like it idles low and kinda rumbles). Since the P2098 code is a generic OBDII code, I decided to take the truck to my local shop which can read BMW codes specifically. There were a lot!!

My assumption is that most of these codes were triggered by the messed up VANOS unit and I asked my shop to delete the codes. Truck ran without throwing a CEL for about 30 miles and then I got a P2098 again which is now constant.

The question I have is:
Can the generic OBDIII reader delete BMW specific codes like the ones above? I ask because some of these codes refer to jammed VANOS unit. I am wondering if these were old codes stored when the VANOS was messed up or are they new codes thrown based on the work I just did?

The truck seems to run great and has not shown the crappy running issues it was showing before I did the VANOS so I am hoping these were all just old codes stored in the ECM that the generic reader had no way to erase.

Bernie
