Aux Fan 3.0D in Oz - UPDATED Electric fan for a diesel

Hi everybody

Got some maintenance coming up inc 6 dead glow plugs to replace and an aux fan not working on the wifes X5.

Looked on ebay for aux fans but couldn't find one to suit the diesel, and after reading through old posts thought I would be able to find something on ebay but no joy (they are all petrol only)

I'm considering just swapping out the coupling with a new one which I can source RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

Has anyone done this or can point me to a better solution?

Cheers

Your saying aux fan but that's the main fan isn't it?

I haven't done that but if it is a separate part I don't see why not. Are you sure the motor is the problem?

What Crowz said: are you saying the clutch is broken so the main fan or the motor is broken on the aux fan?

If it is the fan with the viscous coupler, yes you can replace the viscous coupler.

The motor on an electric fan is only sold as a complete fan unit with the fan housing and fan blade. The motor in addition to being a dc motor it has a computer built in to it to decipher the PWM signal from the DME so it knows how fast to spin the fan.

I saw the fan on the link and it looks like it's the mechanical fan not the electric fan.

Hi ,

Sorry for the confusion, I misread the oem part catalogue and gave you all the wrong direction. My bad.

It is indeed the aux electric fan which obviously has no clutch.

So, can anyone recommend one that works in a diesel?

Cheers

Verify the motor is the problem with direct application of voltage (either test for non-short with Ω meter or use a fuse (50A) first. Have you confirmed the fan doesn't work to rule out control hardware?
