Power difference

Hello, I have a question, I have a x5 2002 3.0i, a few days ago drove another x5 2005 3.0i runs much lighter, accelerates faster than mine, mine has 20" rims and my mother has 17" rims. Running 55 miles and accelerate, X5 my mother to accelerate faster than my x5. Any ideas?? The X5 don't have any modification, no check engine light.

I am thinking maybe vanos are not working correctly, maybe the fan clutch, i don't know. spark plug are laser platinum 3199

The bigger wheels are heavier and give you a bit of a sluggish feel all by themselves.

That may be the difference you are feeling.

Bigger wheels definately play a role in this. When was the last service and what was changed?

I'd check the air filter also if that hasn't been changed in awhile. I recently did that, and the change is responsiveness was very surprising.

As others mentioned already...the "lighter" feel is probably due to the wheel/tire setup. When I switch from my spring/summer/fall 20" staggered style 87 setup to my winter 18" square style 153 setup...the "feel" is obvious. The 275mm & 315mm 20s have a larger contact patch vs the 255mm 18s.

Not sure if it makes any significant difference...but they also have different AWD systems. Yours has the permanent 38/62 torque split (DSC-X)...the other has the variable iDrive system which has a 40/60 torque split when unincumbered.

Does your mothers X5 have a tune on it? Are the final drive ratios of the 2002 the same as the 2005. Oh wait doesn't the 2002 have a 5 speed tranny vs the 2005 running a 6 speed? Gearing ratios make a difference in performance feel.

If it's an automatic, all years 3.0i have 5 speed. Only the manual facelift gets the 6 speed upgrade.

I clean the air filter a month ago, is K&N filter, and change the oil and filter a month ago to.
