Engine / Transmission trade out?

I have an 01 .3.0 X5, it has 216,668 on the original motor and trans. It has been maintained to the highest standards and therefore still drives beautifully.
However, in the future should either engine or tranny fail what is the final year going forward I can swap out an engine/transmission in the 3.0 line? 04? 08?
Has anyone done this? Costly? Thank you.

Engine wise you just need a M54B30. I think the last of those rolled out in 2006.

Transmission wise, if auto, you can go all the way to 2006. Manual, then you can only go out to 2003 for the 5 speed or you can try swapping in the 6 speed of the facelift, which ended on 2006.

Don't hold your breath! I'm at 311,800 miles on the original engine and auto-transmission (no fluid changes either) and I tow a 1400 pound PWC trailer 3000 miles every year. My only drivetrain replacement has been a new front driveshaft with a used transfer case.
