2004 x5 Died on the highway

Good morning.
I had an odd experience this morning. While driving to work. I noticed the battery indicator above the "Service Engine" light was on. A few miles later, A message appeared on the display, something like "going into safe mode" and then some other stuff. Within a 1/2 mile I had to pull car over to side of road. The car lost power and eventually nothing would work. I had dim interior light. Car would not turn over, windows would not go down, automatic locks would hardly work.
Any advise would be appreciated. I'm leaning toward bad battery or and alternator issue. Thank you in advance for reply's.
