Is the Facelifted Version of the E53 SUPERIOR? (2005 and 2006 production runs 4.8is)

Hello my fellow x5ers.. I wanted to share something I came across in my finds... I get my car serviced at a local shop that only does BMW for the past 20-30 years.. They told me I am lucky I got the last of the facelifted models as they had steel parts others dont have.. I didnt quite know what he ment so did some digging around and find this nice info below... Infact there is even a small HP difference, between a 2004 x5 4.8is, and a 2005 one or a 2006 one.. see below :-)

Engine: N62B48 4.8 L (4799 cc/292 in³)

265 kW (360 PS) @ 6200 500 N·m (369 lb·ft) @ 3500 6500 for
year: 2004

270 kW (367 PS) @ 6300 490 N·m (361 lb·ft) @ 3400 6500 for year: 2005

as you can see above - there is small difference of HP and Toque from 2004 to 2005 and 2006 models... 2005 and 2006 models have 367 PS and the prior ones, from 2004 have only 360 PS.. Small difference but there is a reason for that... As you guys know shortly after 2006 BMW discontinued production of the FACELIFED E53's because new models (E70s) were coming off the line... So believe it or not, the last of the X5's the 4.8is with the upgraded parts were ONLY avaliable for 2 years in all of bmw history (2005's and 2006's)...and the 2005 and 2006 year one seen ADDITIONAL improvements over the previous models...

N62B48 Update (They did this update only for last 2 years of production)
The N62 was updated. Originally the N62B48 engine was developed for the 2004 BMW E53 4.8is. Bore was increased to 93.0 mm (from 92.0 mm) and stroke to 88.3 mm (from 82.7 mm) for the 4799 cc N62B48 engine. So they ALMOST like STROKED the beast..... see below guys more interesting stuff:

Updates for the N62B48 engine included:

1.) The crankshaft bearing caps featured apertures to improve ventilation lengthways in the crankcase and reduce pump and splashing losses;

2.) The introduction of a steel crankshaft for greater strength;

3.) Symmetrically-formed and narrower connecting rods

4.) A stronger aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head

5.) Revised exhaust manifolds which prevented residual gases from entering the combustion chamber to improve cylinder charge and torque progression at lower engine speeds; (great for CITY DRIVING)

6.) A modified oil pan that was made from steel (previously cast aluminium) and had a 16 mm lower bottom section; and, An increased capacity oil cooler.

WHO THE HELL KNEW !!! I though the 2004 were identical to the 2006 year ones.. I guess not??? So seems the 2005 and 2006 ones were the best of the best.. If you have that year.. consider yourself lucky I guess

I've driven both and got pre facelift because it seemed to have less issues with suspension, transmission and valve stems. Although I do admit properly taken care of 4.8is feels noticeably quicker and front end looks better. That's just my .2 cents.

The N62B48 of the e53 was the same in those 2 years it was build, it is called N62B48A and has 360HP, the 367HP one is the N62B48B (sometimes also called N62B48TU) of the e60, e65, e70 for example.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N62

I know exactly because I own one of the last e53 4.8is (builddate 14/08/2006) and it has 360HP...

I found a BMW document some time ago where the changes between the N62B48 and it's succesor N62B48TU/B where listed, unfortunately I can't find it at the moment

Edit: this is not the document I'm talking about but it lists the changes also: http://www.meeknet.co.uk/e64/tis_rou...troduction.pdf

Given the choice, I'd rather put 10ft lbs of brick-moving TQ to the ground than HP that I won't see until I'm drag limited anyway.

I think this is only if you think HP is king- which in a car like the E53 is less likely the case.

The one 2 things I know about the later n62 engines in the 4.8is 05-06 is that they installed the improved valve stem seals and the improved intermediate levelers.at least the heads are much better, so that is a huge [or YUGE] plus..........
