Tire Pressure Monitor Reset

Vehicle: 2005 X5 3.0 AT Tire Pressure monitoring via ABS sensors; no sensors in tires

In the time I have owned the X5 (my daughters first vehicle) I often wondered if the tire pressure monitoring system works. It has never triggered the warning light over the last year or so of use, even as temperatures dropped here in Western NY state.

Last week, I put two new tires on it (front position), and, of course, as soon as I started it up and drove it, the Tire Pressure warning light came on. I have verified that all four tires are set to identical pressures. As stated in the first line of the post, this system is the ABS-signal based system, not the system using individual sensors in the tires.

I have done a search here in the forum, and found a chart which says "press reset button five times with key on" for this application. Well, I have tried a variety of ways to push the reset button-with key on, engine not running, key on, engine running, key off, coffee cup in my hand, etc. Tried five times, ten times, and a few other ways. I have driven it about 35 miles and the light still stays on.

Anyone have any thoughts on what else to try, or suggest what I'm not doing correctly?

The pressure system is also sensitive to suspension height, especially if you have airbags. Jacking up the car is sometimes enough to trigger it as the suspension does not set back to original point when putting the car down. I usually turn key to point 2, wait a few seconds, press and hold the tire pressure button and wait for the light on the dash to go away. Btw, are you getting red or orange warning?

The tire circumference of the new tires are probably greater than the two older tires in the rear. Should have replaced all 4 tires at the same time.

If the light does not pop back on as soon as you start driving it will pop on after a hwy run at 60+ as the wheel speed sensors start seeing a larger value of difference.

Since your model year should have the indirect TPS system...when you change the tires or add air etc...you should follow the simple instructions in the owners manual. No need to do multiple presses of the buttons...and even different sized tires should not prevent a reset because it is only resetting a base rotational setting. It's not like the ASC/DSC system that has preset rotational values:

{see initialization instructions from owners manual}

If the table below is what you saw...the instructions are to press the button for 5 seconds ...not 5 times. Which is the same instructions as written in STEP 2 in owners manual instructions above except the table below lists an actual time integer for pressing/holding the FTP button.

Thanks to everyone for their quick replies.

I did try the cluster clearing process from the YouTube video as suggested. Interestingly, it seemed to work properly, as it reset the trip odometer to zero. However, it did not cancel the Tire Pressure warning.

I then tried the "key to position 2, then press and hold reset button" method as suggested. Had to hold it for 11-12 seconds, but that finally cleared it.

I then drove the vehicle 1.1 miles, and no warning light reappeared.

As far as a discussion on new vs worn tire circumference, it had the original equipment tires that came on the vehicle when I bought it. The fronts were to the wear bars, but the backs are at about 80-90% tread. All four are the Michelin Latitude Tour HP 235-65-R17s, H speed rating, and the two new tires were replaced with the identical tires, speed rating and tread pattern.

The Tire Pressure warning light was the yellow/orange one just left of center in the cluster under the speedometer.

I very much appreciate everyone's input, and my high-strung, high maintenance 17 year old daughter doesn't have this warning light staring back at her.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and this thread can be closed out.
Thanks, folks.

The redneck fix would have been to put a piece of black electrical tape over the warning light.

My high maintenance wife doesn't like driving but my high maintenance daughter is looking at getting behind the wheel of one of my Lotus when she turns 16. Fat chance that is going to happen. She'll probably end up with a Jeep.
