It was time when you first bought the X. If you didn't know the X only have an I6 or V8 engine most likely you never open the hood, or your knowledge of car is on par with Mrs. Upallnight.

Dump the car now since you will not be able to DIY the current problem, and your mechanic already told you to dump it.

Well here is the thing, it can't be a head gasket since it had oil in the coolant, it is more likely to be the seal on the oil filter adapter base since it runs high pressure oil and low pressure coolant thru there. Its very diy and seal is like $15

Even the housing could be bad if its corroded due to bad/old coolant

The oil filter base doesn't have coolant running through it. But yeh, sounds like it's not going to be a DIY for you.

As much as I "enjoy" upallnight's particular brand of negativity when it comes to BMW's... I'm usually in agreeance with his diagnoses. If you have oil in the coolant... your head gasket is toast, not your oil filter housing gasket.

I'd suggest doing a compression/leak down test to verify, but I suspect that is beyond the DIY scope in this case. Seems like it's time to sell... or pony up serious cash to have someone else do the work. $3k will go a long ways on these in SOME cases though, so if you REALLY like the vehicle... repairs may be viable. As others said, it's definitely cheaper than a new vehicle.

Oil in coolant could also mean a failed trans cooler. We've seen a couple of those over the years.

A fail Trans cooler will eventually lead to a fail transmission. If coolant is now in the trans that will be another costly service just to verify that coolant is in the transmission. Which part of dump the X doesn't everybody not understand?
