So, what happens when you disconnect both rear suspension level sensors on Xenon X5?
Note: this only applies to X5's equipped with Xenon lights and rear air suspension. Some of later ones with front and rear air suspension have 2 level sensors in front vs one on mine and I believe LWR is somewhat different.
Well, this happened to me by accident and I've been searching for proper info on this subject. I have Bentley but its vague on this subject and actually wrong in one part. To start with: I've replaced front and rear suspension components with Lemforder and Bilstein HD and I'm very happy with it. Rear air suspension is completely gone and with help of PA Soft there is no warning light on dash. The ride is much better than air suspension (IMO) and I don't have to worry about 10 different things going wrong as air suspension issues are about one of most popular on the forum. I've made pretty good money by selling all the rear air suspension components (air bags, air reservoirs, air compressor and module) but I made one mistake: Being relatively new to X5 I though that 2 rear level sensors are strictly for air suspension so I removed them along with brackets and rods and got quite a good price for them. Of course now I realize why the headlight are suddenly little bit lower than they used to be. That brings me to this subject: I could buy them again used along with brackets but most of them on ebay are rusted crap or spend about $200 and get brand new OEM stuff. Since it's obvious that LWR lowered the headlight due to lost signal and for safety reason, I plan to take advantage and adjust the headlights in fixed position. Now, before I before I get screams from Headlight Aim police, I plan to adjust them properly and make sure they stay in the same position. My problem with all this technology is that something always go wrong and there are reports here where LWR did the opposite to what happened to me, that is, actually adjusted headlights too high which of course blinds oncoming traffic. So as an experiment, I may disconnect remaining front right level sensor, disconnect steeper motors, adjust the lights in fixed proper position and be done. As final test, I plan to run X5 on the road while have my wife driving the E39 in opposite direction and make sure it doesn't blind her. I'll vary few roads, angles, curves etc... I'll report back on final solution.
