White smoke & use more oil, 2004 x5 3.0

Manufactured 11/03
Milage: 100,775
2004, x5 3.0
My wife drives the car approx 30 minutes one way to work. Plus 10-15 minute drive's to the store etc..
"Service Engine Soon" light is currently on.
I use the "INNOVA" Can OBD2 scan tool to check & reset the code's.

This is my second post.
Problem 1: The original post is about eninge codes P0171 & P0174, plus misfire code's. Thanks to all who replyed. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...305-p0306.html

I have a problem in the intake duct section. My y-duct (also called connector tube in one online parts reference), has a crack in the smaller (y) section in between the ribs. Pretty sure this is my original problem. I tracked the part & should be in on the 15th of Feb.

Problem 2: This appeared "after" Problem 1.

When the car is started, white smoke will come out of the exhaust. It clears up right away.
Note: This does not happen on every startup. Sometimes everything is clear & normal.
I had noticed some heavier oil use in the past. I check the forum & I remember it to be within normal oil usage according to the forum.
I am currently monitoring the oil usage. After I have some data, I will post the results.

When I removed the y-duct to attempt a repair, I noticed some oil laying in the cover underneath the engine (Front End Reinforcement Plate?) not sure what it is. Also, there are a couple of spots showing up on the garage floor. 1 drop about the size of a silver dolar, & 1 drop, 4 in. long x approx. 1 in. wide. Both are a small amount. Nothing major. There were no obviouse leaks prior to problem 1.
I have noticed a funny noise (only 3 or 4 time's) when starting the car. It clears up right away.
I have checked the forum for similar problems. I am directed & leaning toward the CCV (Crankcase breather valve). No horn sound yet. Also some members mention a DISA valve. I'm not sure what the DISA is. Also mentioned a Vanos, which I think is what I have. Not sure what the funtion/difference is of each or how they would cause this problem.

How I found the problem: My wife & I took a long drive. Approx 3 hrs with a few stops. The car ran fine until we were approx. 3 miles from home. At a stop light we notice rough idle. Did not run as smooth at highway speed. When I pulled into the driveway, the engine shut off. I had to restart 2 time's, then I was able to limp up the driveway into the garage.
The check engine oil message showed up on the trip. Of course the Service Engine Soon had come on. I don't think it appeared until the stop light. I checked the oil level & added approx. 2 quarts of oil (castrol 5w30). The car then ran ok for a few day's. One day on the way to work it stalled a few times. I changed the plug & it has run very smooth. Idle is a little rougher but it does not stall. Highway is great with plenty of power & very smooth.
I don't drive the car that much, but remember seeing the "Service Engine Soon" light. The next time I drove the light would be off. I figured the light was a maintenance issue since the car was approaching 100k. So, it looks like the problem has been growing over a couple of month's.
I think these are all the indicators. If I can remember anything else I will post them. In all the car has run flawless. This is the first problem I have really had. I am posting in hope's that someone, can stear me in the right direction. I will perform the repair's myself. My intent is to, fix problem 1 once I recieve the y-duct, clear the code's, then see if the initial codes clear. I will keep a watch on the oil consumption, looking for the cause & of course check the forum.
Thank you in advance to all that reply.

Jay

Sounds like your oil separator is toast, do a search and you will find lots of helpful information.

The Y-tube is the rubber connector from just after the MAF to the throttle body and the ICV. The part that attaches to the ICV is where it is probably cracked or broken.

Thanks for the reply. Got it now. Did you have issues getting to some those clamps? They look buried.

Remove the DISA valve and you will get enough room to take off the clamp on the throttle body and the ICV. I use a socket on a flexible extension.
