Does Anyone know what the torque setting should be for the knock sensors under the inlet manifold. I suspect they are not torques correctly and giving false readings to the ECU

The torque values can be found in online manuals too but it can be time consuming to track down a number of them at once - the factory manuals have an annoying features of using codes to represent the torque values, with a look up table at the back of the manual.
Here's the torque table for your car... BMW Workshop Manuals > X Series E53 X5 4.4i (M62) OFFRD > 4 Tightening Torques > 0 Maintenance And General Data > 1 AZD Excerpt From Company Standard BMW GS 90003-2

Torque settings
Hi, thanks, will have a look.
Will then check the readings on the knock sensors again.

Good evening all,
And so continues the saga of the X5. The thermostat isnt working. Keeps full open all the time. The temp was 75C when driving along the freeway. The front wheel bearing makes the lovely rumble noise, so another part to buy. The viscous coupling on the fan doesnt work. Removed the fan and tested it. I spins freely after spinning it a few times, So another part to the list. The front electric fan is also dead. So another part. Then the check engine light came on while driving today Started to idle rough at stop streets. So need to check what that is. I have misplaced the cable to link INAP to the car, But did check with an ODB2 reader. Does show a few faults. Did an oil change as the oil I put in recently smells bad already. Suspec the PO didnt change oil often, if ever. And so the new oil is cleaning all the gunk off the innards. Will do another oil change soon, hope to remove some of the old oil deposits. Did the tappet cover gaskets. Made a dfference to fuel cinsumption too. Need to do gearbox oil as it probabaly hasnt been done Has about 100k miles on the clock now. So there we have it for today. The list of goodies to do gets longer each day And some days we fix one or two and another one or two are added. And all in all, still a magic truck to drive. Till the next exciting instalment, happy driving

When the fan coupling is cold it should spin fairly easily for a unit that is broke in. Use a hair drier or a heat gun to warm the coil on the front of it and see if it still spins freely. If it locks up or drags it should still be good.
If you replace it, it may sound like a jet taking off. This is typical until it gets worn in.

So, herewith an update
Got a new viscous fan. Does work as the temp going up the hill stays at about 88dC Had an error of cylinder three being switched off. Swapped spark plugs, and coil Seems to have cleared that error. So,.... Does anyone know what the LU-Meter readings are in INPA? Cylinder five goes to aboit -2310 Seems due cylinder one reading very low. So might be compensating on cylinder five. All others are below 1000 and move up and down a little. Did check spark plug for cylinder five, seems to be running very lean compared to cylinder two and three. Disconnected all onock sensors, the do pop up as errors on INPA. Doesnt seem to make a difderence to LU meter readings Also found what seems to be a crack in the valve cover on the cylinder five bank. If I blow into the oil scavenger pipe, there is a breeze coming out at an odd place. Suspect it is a small crack. The engine has a rough idle, suspect due to cylinder five. So the fun carries on.

Next instalment
Removed the exhaust system
Cut apart the cats, removed the innards, and welded it all together. The innards are a littke melted And the INPA shows an inbalance So am going to swap injectors and coil packs tomorrow Used to run better until I did the tappet cover gaskets, when I swapped coil packs around The primary lamda sensors look fine, the post cat ones seem broken.

Buying and rescuing an X5
ZAX5 - I'm loving your installment renovation. I'm a newbie X5 owner as well, trying to do as much as I can, and this forum has been immensely helpful.
Back to INPA - Im trying to buy one for my vehicle and no-one can guarantee it will work on my car - so if anyone can help that is greatly appreciated. BMW X5 - E53 series - chassis LM 454 28 (Australian) - petrol 3.0 litre - 2001 / 09 build date Thanks, Sal |
