Recommended programming software?!

Good day all!! (I think we need a programming / coding section)

I have been doing a lot to my 2004 4.4L and my new-to-me amazing 2002 4.6is... I've been fighting the 2004 for about eight months or so... I rebuilt the motor which took some time to make sure all the "i's" were dotted and "t's" were crossed, and then verified again just for good measure... It took some time with parts and the such... But this EGS module made by Bosch, used in the ZF 6hp26 transmission for BMW is just killing me!! I think it is one of a very few items I can't physically program with WinKPS or code with NCS Expert... SOOOOOO, I got the ICOM A and installed ISTA/P on a BMW dedicated computer... I programmed the EGS exactly the way I have read time and time again, but it just isn't right... Like, so far from being right, I should put the original back in...

Likewise, I have programmed the LCM in the 4.6is also with issues... If I had to guess, it is like the program info I have is from the 1970's, which I know is impossible... The LCM should be a very basic program... But after the program, I don't have fogs that stay on, and I don't have front side markers with my headlights on (just driving lights)... I'm tempted to program the whole vehicle, but I'm worried I might just brick every module in the vehicle... Now, I know I need a power supply... And the use of my idling Durango hooked up to the X's via two sets of jumper cables might not pass in some garages, but I had 13.36-13.76 volts the entire time... The high output alternator with the Hemi motor just grinned and kept going... Sure, I burned up $28 bucks in gas an hour, but........

Having said ALL that to ask this: Should I get a more E53-ish user friendly program software OR keep going with the ICOM and ISTA/P?? I think it is PA Soft.... And one other one that my tired brain can't think of... I got the ICOM and ISTA/P for future program use, but it's useless unless it works for my E53 which I have right now...

Anyone have crazy amazing luck programming replacement modules with something other than ISTA/P??? Or maybe point me in a different direction with the ISTA/P that I might be missing?

Thanks guys and gals!!!

Cheers!!

I agree, a coding section would be really cool
I have the programs, and have stumbled my way through them, managed to disable the automatic door locks at XX km/h! but nothing more complicated! (double flashing hazzards etc)

Carly has gotten pretty good in it's latest iteration. I used it to code off voltage monitoring in the LCM but I don't think you'd be able to use it to replace modules and recode the VIN's.

Yes there needs to be a coding section. I threw out a query a few times but got no response.

Thanks everyone!

Can you program VIN's with PA soft? Need any special connections like the ICOM that I already have? I think I have some more research in store for me! I'm so bloody ready to part this 2004 out! It would just be such a shame to, with it being so nice!

Thanks again all!

BMW Coding Forum

BMW Coding Forum talks about NCS expert (I have still to learn about this beast).

and if you are programming the EGS you will get no where in your face-lifted x5. its the GKE module you need for that tranny.

Okay, I'm going to take a look at this when I get home... I was reading up on programming and coding and yada yada yada... It appears I may need to code it after programming as the programming just puts basic parameters in the module... The coding actually marry's up the module to the vehicle... I am also going to look into Tool32 when I get home... It is essentially the only software I didn't mess with from the standard tools folder...

Thanks all!! I'll keep yous updated how it goes and any tricks I might figure out...

Cheers!!!

Good day all!!

Well, I am not going to jinx myself here, but I programmed the EGS again via my ICOM and ISTA/P... The last time I did it, I did two things different... I only hooked up the durango and two jumper cables... This time I did the durango and my 4.6is with three sets of jumper cables... The other change is the long cable that came with the ICOM... I had it in play last time... This time I hooked the ICOM directly to the OBD port... A little difficult, but at least it won't fall out while programming...

The voltage readings fluctuated maybe .2 volts the entire time... 13.56V (+/- 0.12v)... And I got a status that indicated the module was actually being programmed... I also went into manual selection... I let the software determine the plan of action last time... Additionally, I coded the entire vehicle after the EGS program and coding had completed... Oddly, I got an error on my DSC... Something about it not having the correct parameters for the international something or other... So, after the complete vehicle was done, I went back in and programmed and coded the DSC... that worked too... Actually took longer to program the DSC than it did the EGS at over 20 minutes...

So, I didn't take it out yet... I'm actually nervous... But I did start it... Throttle response was night and day different!! I can't explain it!! WOW!!! I really really hope this programming worked!! I also checked the info using INPA... The VIN for the EGS didn't change last time... Rather odd, but figured it was a status thing and didn't have much to do with programming... Well, this time it changed... and the assembly number got updated too...

My fingers are crossed!! Going for a test drive in about three minutes...

Cheers all!!!
