Please Help me diagnose this 4.8 engine noise
Hi All

Wife is out of town with our 2009 X5 4.8. 125k

Engine started making this noise.

Doesn’t seem to be belt related

Same if Ac is on or off

Gets louder with higher rpms

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the water pump to me...

Best would be to pull off the belt and hand spin everything from water pump to alternator etc that will give you a good idea on what it is. Would have to agree it does sound like it’s the water pump. Good luck.

Ok. Thanks. Replaced the water pump 3 months ago when we did the coolant pipe fix. Could be a bad part though.

Interesting if that’s the case it may not be the pump. I mean it could be defect but hard to say. Pull the belt spin everything and see if you can track it down that way. Keep us posted

It was the CVT system. One of the caps was not sealed properly, disassembled and reassembled and the noise went away. Hope this helps someone in the future.
