Loud groan from front suspension..

So all of a sudden the X has been experiencing a very loud (and embarrassing) groan from the front left Suspension. It makes the noise when stationary and you turn the wheel, or when the suspension cycles up and down, but I can't seem to track down where it is coming from.

It also does NOT make the noise if there is no load on the suspension (so with the car jacked-up and the wheel off the ground, turning the wheel it makes no sound. But if I use a small bottle jack under the arm and put some load back on the assembly, it groans again.

So I'm stumped. Tension strut, Ball Joint maybe? Or the rear 'Wishbone' link? The noise is amplified up the strut tube greatly, and is almost impossible to track to its source, try as I might.

I suppose it could also be the Tie-Rod End or Swaybar link, but I don't think loading it would change the behavior of the tie-rod end, and the sway bar link seems like a long shot since it does it when stationary and turning the wheel, without suspension movement.

Hate to just start throwing parts at it, but may try the ball joint this weekend unless anyone has any other insight?

If you jack up the car and place your hands at 12 and 6 oclock and wiggle up and down and left to right is there any play in the wheel if you move it? If there is no play in the wheel it probably would not be ball joints. I know strut bearing can go out and make some funky sounds. Is the sound only when stationary or when you are driving as well?

Hmmmm...

Found this Video Late Last Night (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62bVn7E8gyk) and it is the exact same noise/Symptoms, so I ordered the lower ball joint for the tension rod and the Rear Link with ball joint for next day delivery..

So I hope its not the Strut bushing , crap..
Guess I will find out this weekend..

Well,

I replaced the Control Arm/Ball Joint assembly and the Tension Arm Ball Joint yesterday. Took 4+ hours of wrestling and trips back and forth to the auto parts store for different pullers/tools to get everything apart, and about 20 minutes to put it all back together with the new parts and test drive.

Fingers crossed, but it has been silent since. The issue would come and go though, so I won't be 'sure' till I've driven a week or so without issue..

Parts replaced show in red box/circle, for those who may come across this thread in the future with a similar issue..

As always, thanks for everyone's input..

I love Chris Fix. His channel is very helpful, not European specific, but helpful none-the less.

Hope you got it sorted once and for all. Fingers crossed for you. The work you just did is harder than replacing the upper strut mount though... so if it turns out to be bad or go bad in the future, it's not as bad as what you just did. The lower ball joint on the tension arm in the knuckle is usually a BEAR to remove. Took me 10 hours to do just those two ball joints on both sides.

Edit: Surprised you didn't do the front tension arm bushing too though (#7). It's usually the first component to fail in the front suspension and is known to cause noises and if really bad, knocking.

Also a fan. Also finding some weird suspension noises. Over the past couple days my 4.8 has basically started groaning. Almost like a slow, bass-heavy fart. It comes from the left side, typically while turning and getting some body roll. Can't tell if it's front or rear. Over the past six months I've done damn near the whole suspension. :/
  • Control arms and ball joints
  • Tie Rods
  • Alignment
  • New wheels (wheel and tires)
  • Road force balance
  • Left front air strut
