X5 e53 Cargo Mat question

Hey there.

I just searched through the forums on this topic and did not find a definitive answer. I am looking for an all-weather cargo liner for the X5 (no sliding load floor) and am definitely going to choose either the OEM all-weather version or the Weathertech product (http://tinyurl.com/3yxrnd). Anyone have any advice? As the OEM version will be cheaper (suprisingly), I am leaning that way, but wasn't sure if the Weathertech version would be that much better/heavier/more durable. For what it's worth, I am going to be loading heavy music equipment (speakers, amps, etc) so durability is a must.

Thanks for the help.

Rob

I have the OEM cargo mat and it is SUPER flimsy. That being said you don't really need anything too heavy duty back there. I would suspect that the weathertech ones are more similar to the thickness of the all weather floor mats which would explain the pricing difference.

I also have the OEM (I think - previous owner purchased it) and it is OK if whatever you are putting in there is no larger than the mat itself - otherwise the sides will be bent down under whatever items you are putting in there. Also, things tend to slide around on the mat where they might not on the carpet. If all you are trying to do is protect the floor from the equipment and have no chances of any kind of spills, I would probably recommend a heavy-duty carpet mat.

Cool

I have the OEM liner and its fine (about $60 usd). I have heard its pretty much the same as the Weathertec but don't quote me on that. Last week a red bull was pinched back there and completely leaked out. The liner kept the carpet 100% untouched! I load and unload heavy items almost daily in my X so the liner was a must. The carpet is still like new. Glad I bought it!
Oh, and :xoutpost: BTW I'm also a musician

I've got the Weathertec and it fits like a glove. It's got a 2" lip all around the edges to keep spills from damaging the carpet. The lip is on the tail-gate edge as well, which can get in the way of loading and unloading. This seems to be the only drawback, other than the price.

Cool

The OEM liner also has the lip on the tail gate edge and tends to get in the way also (could be trimmed with a razor knife). I cut out the circles for the OEM straps and tie down hooks on the sides. Even with the cut-outs, the red bull spill (post #5) didn't get on the carpet (due to the depressions on the liner).

i just picked up the oem mat today. i was surprised about it being cheaper too. now i know why

it is flimsy and does not have a nice thick rubber feel to it. it is slightly harder and thinner. i am sure it will do its job, but i was expecting standard bmw experience and quality and do not feel i got what i paid for

we have a huskyliner in our jeep grand cherokee and i love it. it was comparable in price to the oem x5 and i should have gotten that one instead...

I've had the Weathertech in my last 4 cars, and just got one for my new-to-me '04 4.4. I've hauled gravel, mulch, brick pavers and reac car wheels and tires and have yet to damage a Weathertech. But I have an advantage- I live 20 minutes from their HQ here in IL so I can just go in and pick one up.
