My bad, forgot the mileage, corrected now.
It's one of those things where we all wonder what's wrong with that guy.
Well, I'm that guy now.
Several things:
I need reliable family SUV and X5 is not that. I don't care who chimes in, M62 is not as reliable as let's say something newer Japanese I'm thinking of.
This is German muscle car that's very temperamental and I'm at point in my life where I need tamed, reliable boring SUV for hauling my family.

I know.....almost sold my X5 too.

Then I drove/carsitting a 2015 Toyota Kluger and a 2016 Lexus NX200h on two separate trips....love driving these suvs for a few days.....relatives were overseas for holiday vacation.

But got bored quickly and was really thinking.......my X5 felt more enjoyable to drive than these two suv's on long trips.

Liked the Kluger for size and Lexus for interior......for my driving habits both failed in driving pleasure.....

Although mine is 12 years older......It still gets attention from other drivers....whether on standstill or blasting thru freeways.

Anyways............Good luck with the sale and let us know the replacement model.

Thanks. I keep looking and trying to find something not to boring.

tl;dr - I have no justification for my cars, but I like them. An Explorer is better.

I have three BMWs and it is, objectively, a pain in the ass. For a guy with three cars you'd be shocked how often I end up in a taxi - usually to or from a repair shop. My wife has a '17 Explorer - it's bigger, faster, has more options and costs less. I enjoy driving it at least as much as the X5 and maybe as much as my M3.

At one point I decided to sell my fleet and move to one car. I ended up choosing a Land Rover Discovery Sport. I agonized over the online options builder, but ended up kitting it out in red, with black accents and wheels and a cream leather interior. Almost a clone of my X5. Oops. I decided to keep the BMWs.

None of the kids particularly give a crap about the Explorer. They love the X5. My littlest draws pictures of it and is happy every time he can get inside. The BMWs get looks and attention - the Explorer only gets the "cop/not-a-cop" glance. We go to events and on adventures in the BMWs. We go grocery shopping and on commutes in the Explorer.

Not to be that guy, but an M62 is actually quite reliable once you rebuild it— new chain guides, rebuilt Vanos, new water pump, rebuilt alternator, new valley pan, new front main seal, etc. It's everything else that starts breaking, haha.

Well, after 15 years of wrenching on BMW's, I'm ready for the new level of reliable: 2 year old car that has no forum which talks about what's the latest thing broke.
It's pretty bad feeling when you're on your way back from Florida and about 300 miles from home when car decides to die in the middle of interstate with pretty much no warning (throttle body, resolved).
I'm definitely keeping E39's which will give me plenty to wrench.

Yes the X5 is no where as reliable as the E39s. I love my X5 and will put up with it what comes next (currently waiting for window regulator from ECS) but I have a theory as to why they are not as reliable. The X5 is built in South Carolina and many of the components come from US vendors. The E39 is built out of Germany and many of its components are from German vendors. One example: The X5 E53 has a known evaporator leak that can occur. High failure rate, US Valeo unit. Its a bear and big money to fix if you cannot do it yourself. Valeo is better known as a automotive lighting manufacturer/supplier. The E39 on the other hand rarely has evaporator failures better engineered. Behr makes the Evaporator unit for the E39. They have more experience and know how when it comes to cooling.

That's not theory but pretty much a fact.
We have to understand that E39 engineering while only younger about 5 years in production date, it does come from era of better parts and quality control.
No offense, but I never understood made in USA craze. Sure, it's patriotic and it helps US jobs, but if you're after quality it doesn't matter made in China or Uzbekistan.
It's about manufacturer using (or not) highest quality controls and materials in production.
Another example of South Carolina plant sloppiness:
My X5 ($70k BMW flagship at that time) has no paint at side edges of the hood and the areas around where front and rear doors meet. Not noticeable till you raise the hood or open the doors and than it looks like Yugo 45 paint job.
Not really helping my sale pitch, but it's a fact.
