Removing Black Plastic Cover

I know this must have been asked and answered a thousand times, but all I can find is a multitude of threads about how to remove the main engine covers. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the black plastic cover off that sits right at the front of the engine compartment on a 2002 X5. It looks like I should be able to just pull up on it, or pry up the little buttons, but it sure feels like I'm going to break something if I put any more pressure on it. What am I missing here?
